The works of New York artist Daniel Ludwig are often based on fleeting, shadowy dream images that oscillate between colour, texture and symbolic, often mythological subjects.

Vita

The human figure is usually at the centre of Daniel Ludwig's works. He positions his graceful protagonists like an old master - sometimes as stand-alone figures, sometimes in mythological scenes. His figures are elusive - they dissolve into fluid, abstract forms, creating a dynamic interplay of naturalism and abstraction, of reality and dream - like fragments of memory rising from our subconscious in front of our inner eye. His compositions are influenced by the psychoanalytical work of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, who understood dreams as fragments of what we have experienced and of a collective subconscious.

Ludwig studied in Rome and it was in the Eternal City that he developed his fascination with overlapping layers of history and stories, which play a major role in his complex compositions. His overlapping painting style is reminiscent of superimposed, sometimes torn, posters on an ancient wall: stories on stories.
