The portraits and lush still lifes of flowers and fruits by photographer Joseph Fischnaller appear like painted. Vita

Joseph Fischnaller is particularly known for his elaborate restagings of famous Renaissance and Baroque paintings. The elaborate costumes are made of materials that he detached from their original context to form a subtext that questions our pictorial memory with subtle irony.

In Fischnaller's latest series, the interplay between the traditional and the experimental blurs the boundaries between photography and painting further. The ink used to reproduce the photograph is not fixed but remains fluid, transforming the original motifs into expressive new forms. Fischnaller then continues to document this process of metamorphosis with his camera.

Fischnaller was born in 1964 in Grieskirchen, Austria. After training as a photographer, he opened his first studio in Vienna. In 2007 he moved to Berlin, where his artistic series 'Kings & Queens', 'Magnificent' and 'Erotica' were created.
