Markus Fräger

Markus Fräger staged his pictures like scenes from an American film noir. With a quick brush stroke he opens up windows into intimate and important moments in the lives of his protagonists.

Vita

Markus Fräger's works are reminiscent of large-scale baroque compositions: By foreshortening perspective, he achieves an extraordinary effect of depth and illusionistically expands the space. His figures are staged on this spatial stage in front of a dark background with dynamic brushstrokes, illuminated like spotlights.

Markus Fräger made figuration his main theme early on. Chance plays an important role in his painterly process: he begins the genesis of a new work by cleaning his brushes - which he had previously used on other paintings - on the empty new canvas. This creates a first painterly layer, which he picks up again in the layers above.

The artist lived and worked in Cologne, where he died on 17 August 2020.
